Over the last several months, people have asked, "Where did you come up with the name for Tapestry Church?" So I thought I'd answer that question here.
The idea really came from Tony Serna back in the spring of 2006. It seems that a true tapestry, like all woven textiles, is made up of the warp thread and the weft thread. Normally you see both, but in a tapestry the artwork is formed by the weft threads only, and the warp threads are completely hidden.
That being the case, most ancient tapestry weavers used cheaper threads for the warp, since it was never seen, and in many cases these were threads that were frayed or even broken. The weft thread, however, was the visible portion of the artwork, so weavers used linen, cotton, silk, silver and even gold thread to create the beauty of the artwork.
At Tapestry Church, our desire is to be a place where people who are broken or frayed can be woven together to produce a beautiful work of art, the body of Christ. When outsiders look at Tapestry, they won’t see the brokenness of the people, they'll see the beauty of the Savior.
We want Tapestry to be a place where broken lives are mended by love, acceptance, hope, forgiveness, encouragement and guidance.
So that's our name, Tapestry Church, and that's who we are...a place where people who are broken or frayed are woven into the body of Christ.
