Making a Difference This Saturday

Last Monday night I attended a parent's meeting for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Cartersville High School. I was really impressed and want to let all Bartow Countians know about something cool that will take place this Saturday, August 29th, and that will benefit the FCA chapters at EVERY Bartow County high school.

First, FCA members will offer free car washes at Diamond Auto Wash on Old Mill Road (across from Crescent Bank) from 11am - 2pm this Saturday. Donations will be accepted, and every penny goes to the local FCA chapters.

Second, Gold's Gym is sponsoring Gold's Fest this Saturday, 11am til whenever, at West End Commons (off Henderson Drive). There will be lots of games for the kids, bounce house, face painting, free food, and a chance to buy a $5 raffle ticket. (More on that in a moment, but it's the whole reason behind Gold's Fest). Grand Prize is a full body makeover at Gold's, and there are all kinds of other prizes.

Here's the deal with the $5 raffle tickets - every single penny from the sale of the tickets goes directly to help send teenagers to FCA camp next summer. Every single penny.

So take some time this Saturday and help the FCA continue to make an impact in the lives of the teenagers of Bartow County. It'll be well worth it.

Four-peat

Time for a little bragging... Yesterday Tori's Cartersville Middle School soccer team won their fourth straight region championship! Well, it may be their fifth, but it's their fourth straight with a Sims on the team. Their only loss of the season was in the final regular season game, when they lost to Woodland in PKs. Woodland finished undefeated, but yesterday those same two teams met in the championship game, with Tori and the Canes winning in PKs. Congratulations Tori and CMS!

A Special Send-Off

Monday, March 2, is going to be the day of a special send-off for a fellow TCer. Rob Lannom is leaving for Afghanistan with Bravo Troop, 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry, and the send-off ceremony for Rob's group will be held on Monday at 10:00 am at First Baptist Church, One Mission Point, Canton, Georgia. If you can make it to Canton, that would be great. And whether or not you can attend the send-off, please keep Rob and Andi in your prayers during his one-year deployment in service to his country.

What a Week!

What a week it's been!

Here's a brief summary of the last several days...

On Halloween, Andy was a great Luigi!  He had a blast getting the candy that night, and I've had a blast eating it.

Saturday brought soccer games for the girls, and then Andy and I went with the Crane's to the Hawks home opener! Philips Arena was rockin', and though we were down by 21 at one point, we took our first lead with 2 minutes to go and never looked back. Awesome time!

On Sunday we heard part 2 of Andy's series Judgment Call. There have been so many times in my 18 years in the ministry when someone had to be lovingly confronted, only to have others rise up in protest saying, "You're not to judge!" We learned Sunday that churches have this completely backwards! We think we should judge people outside the church and give everyone inside a free pass. That's just the opposite of what the Bible teaches!

We also had Moxie and the guys leading worship - great job!!

Sunday night meant InsideOut for grades 6-12. Jason Sartain led us in a beautiful all-acoustic worship set, and Josh continued the series Rhythm. Great time!

Then sometime on Sunday night, I came down with a cruddy sinus infection and I'm just now returning to normal.

So that's my summary of the last few days.

Interesting Survey

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life recently surveyed 35,000 Americans and found that 70% of the respondents agreed with the statement, "Many religions can lead to eternal life."

(Incidentally, among those who consider themselves "evangelical Christians," 57% agreed with that statement, one percentage higher than Muslims at 56%.)

But in an earlier but related Pew survey, 67% stated that they believed that the Bible is the "word of God."

So how does that happen?  70% believe many religions lead to eternal life, yet 67% believe the Bible is the word of God. So what do you do with verses like John 14:6, Acts 4:12 and 1 Timothy 2:5?

And how can these surveys help you as you invest in the lives of your friends?
